Detweiller at Dark

More than a half century after a historic Olympic run, young runners still want to learn from Bob Schul, the only American to win the gold medal in 5000 meters.

Schul, who won at the 1964 games in Tokyo, brought two runners that he trains in Ohio to Detweiller at Dark on Friday night. It was his first trip to Peoria.

He made a personal appearance at Running Central the day before the race and signed one of his books and met runners at the sign in tent on Friday.

“I really enjoy doing it,” Schul said. “I like talking to kids, see what they are doing in training, to find out what they need to do to get better. It’s my first time in Peoria. They have a lot of fun with their running here. The kids were so much fun to meet.”
